market display of apples

This is my entry into a 100-word microfiction story contest through NYC Midnight. The prompts given were… Genre: Romantic Comedy, Action: Improvising, Word: Comfort.

Microfiction written by Stefanie Gilmour.

The Story

Ballet shoes over her shoulder, she visited the market after class. The stock boy was there, as he’d been all summer.

She’d rehearsed her question. Practice brought her comfort.

He placed the last apple on a display.

Their shoulders touched. She grabbed an apple.

He looked at her.

She held up the fruit. “Did you know apples…”

Physics didn’t favor her selection. They tried to stop the landslide of fruit. She lost her apple.

He looked at her. He handed her a pomegranate instead.

“…are about 25 percent air?”

“Did you know most ballet terms are French?”

“I’m Anna.”

“John.”
