I Wrote a Book

  • by

I don’t know what I’m doing.

For some reason I feel the need to say this to everyone. Most of the time the comment is dismissed with a bout of shared nervous laughter between myself and whoever I’m talking to. However, today, a dear friend and amazing human being made a point of responding differently to this. She gave me the proverbial swat on the nose with the rolled-up newspaper. In a roundabout way, she said:

Stop saying you don’t know what you’re doing. You wrote a book.

And you know what…she’s right. Earlier this year, shut away in our home amidst a worldwide pandemic, I finally said “F*ck it.” I gave self-doubt the finger, sat down in front of the computer, and purged my head and heart of the story that’s been brewing in there for almost two years now. It was frustrating at times, extremely therapeutic, and a whole lot of fun.

I wrote a book, and I want to share it.

The end goal is to get the story published so I can get it into the hands of more people. I am told the current industry climate requires a writer to bring not only a book proposal, but an audience, to a publisher. With my background in marketing and design, this makes complete sense, but man it’s hard for me. I’m much more comfortable as a wallflower.

So, I’m going to attempt a compromise. In this virtual space, I plan on logging my quest to get my book published. My passion for learning is evergreen, so I’ll be sharing all the info I parse through about the craft of writing too. To be honest, there will also be a lot of stuff I just swoon over and find inspirational. It’s going to be a hell of a rollercoaster ride. I would love for you to join me.

    1. Thank you so much, Gail! And thank you for being an awesome, supportive person in general. I will never forget the morning in Portland you so graciously welcomed this nervous gardener to her first Fling. ^_^
